Unilever’s “Why Bring a Child Into the World?” Series Features Lesbian Moms-to-Be

Jessica and Maria are having a baby — and have made a video talking about why they want to bring a child into the world despite food shortages, overpopulation, war, and other large-scale challenges. The video is part of Unilever’s Project Sunlight, “a new initiative to inspire sustainable living.” It “invites consumers to get involved in doing small things which help their own families, others around the world and the planet.”

In Memoriam: Nelson Mandela, Hero of Human Rights

Nelson Mandela, the first Black president of South Africa, died today at the age of 95. His greatest legacy, of course, will be having led the country out of apartheid — but he also had a significant impact on LGBT equality.

More Kids for “The Fosters” Family

Congratulations to Sherri Saum, who plays lesbian mom Lena Foster on ABC Family’s The Fosters. She and her husband, actor Kamar de los Reyes, are expecting twins! That means there’s one burning question bothering us fans: Will the Fosters’ family grow as Saum’s does?

Breastfeeding: One Lesbian Mom’s Experience

Whether you’ve breast fed, bottle fed, or adopted kids after they were weaned, you should go read “Failing at Feeding” over at Brain, Child. In it, writer Paige Schilt offers some excellent thoughts on maternal stereotypes and expectations, being the lone lesbian in a mothers’ support group, and the physical and emotional toll of having difficulties with breastfeeding.

Give Back on Giving Tuesday

Today is Giving Tuesday, a new-ish, more altruistic counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, when we’re asked to give back to our communities and our world. Will you be giving (monetarily or otherwise) today or at other times during this holiday season?

Actor Maria Bello Comes Out to Her Son — and the World

If you read just one piece today, make it “Coming Out as a Modern Family,” by actor and activist Maria Bello (ER, Coyote Ugly, The Jane Austen Book Club, Prisoners, and the unfortunately short-lived U.S. version of Prime Suspect, among others). Bello writes in the New York Times about her relationship with another woman, coming out to her son, and why she refuses to put a label on her love.

World AIDS Day: Remembering the Children

Today is World AIDS Day. Since so many other LGBT sites are ably covering how HIV/AIDS impacts the LGBT community, I want instead to highlight once again some recent statistics about HIV/AIDS and children. There has been a drop in new infections over the last few years, but even so, the numbers are still sobering.

The Best Rendition of “I Had a Little Dreidel” Is by a Lesbian Mom

Yes, there is more to Hanukkah music than “I Had a Little Dreidel,” elementary school music teachers notwithstanding. But while this week’s once-in-a-lifetime concurrence of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah has led to any number of new “Thanksgivukkah” songs, sometimes I just want the classics. And Julie Silver’s bluesy rendition of “Dreidel” makes what can sometimes be a tired old number seem cool again.

Travel for LGBT Families: Ideas, Ideas, and More Ideas

Miss the Twitter party on travel for LGBT families a few weeks ago? It was an hour of non-stop stories and ideas — so much so that one of the hashtags was trending for some time. The Residence Inn team has recapped it on Facebook; Traveling Mom has culled some of the many responses to each question; and The Advocate has recapped it as well. Check them out for ideas to make your next trip a great one!
