An Oklahoma judge has vacated her earlier decision that ordered a nongestational mother removed from her child’s birth certificate. This means the mom can stay on the birth certificate, but still does not guarantee her parental rights. It’s a case all queer parents should note carefully.
Two new middle-grade novels, one by the lauded Alex Gino and one by debut author Michael Leali, focus on queer youth exploring queer history within the context of queer communities. These joyous, empowering, inspirational books are great reads for Pride or any time of year!
From the latest “queer parents making a mark” files: The U.S. Senate voted at the end of May to confirm Charlotte Sweeney, a Colorado employee rights attorney and a lesbian mom, to the federal judiciary. She will be the first out LGBTQ federal judge in Colorado and the first out LGBTQ woman to serve as a federal district court judge in any state west of the Mississippi, according to the White House.
This was going to be a very different column. Then 19 children and two adults were shot and killed by a gunman at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Second-generation queer kids—queer kids with queer parents—are seeing a wave of representation in books right now. It’s a myth that LGBTQ parents “make” our kids LGBTQ, but statistically, some are going to be, so it’s great to see their growing inclusion!
The Mombian Database of LGBTQ Family Books, Media, and More now has more than 1000 items in it—and counting! With LGBTQ-inclusive books under increased attack, I hope this database can play a part in connecting those who need such books with the many titles that now exist.
