A boy named Toby, who has two moms, is upset that he can no longer see the stars after the family moves to the city. His moms suggest making stars out of paper, but Toby says they’re not the same. One night, a lion appears from his closet and takes him on a magical adventure to find the North Star. Along the way, they find many lost animals, mythical and otherwise, but almost despair until Toby confronts a sort-of-but-not-really scary dragon and is able to find the star to lead them all home.
Toby is afraid he’ll never see the lion and his animal friends again, but the beast assures him “we’ll always be here for you.” In the end, Toby seems comforted hanging up paper stars with the help of his moms.
Sweet and soothing—a perfect story for families who have recently moved or are about to do so.
Toby and his moms are Asian.
