Alan Cole Is Not a Coward

Twelve-year-old Alan Cole is bullied by his older brother and cowed by their domineering father. He tries not to stand out at school or to make any close friendships. When his brother Nathan finds out that Alan has a crush on another boy in the school, Nathan challenges Alan to another round of his ongoing “Cole vs. Cole” challenges. The winner is whoever can complete the most of seven difficult tasks, including becoming the most well-known kid in school, getting a first kiss, and standing up to their father. If Alan fails, Nathan will out him.

The bullying and family trauma make this a difficult and potentially triggering read at times—some readers may prefer to avoid it—but Alan’s growing friendships and ultimate bravery offer a final message of hope.

Alan and his family are White.
