Awâsis and the World-Famous Bannock

A young child (Awâsis) accidentally drops her Kôhkum’s (grandmother’s) freshly baked, world-famous bannock into the river while delivering it to a relative. She doesn’t know what to do, but encounters a variety of woodland creatures who offer advice and ingredients for making bannock. One of them is an owl who uses “they” pronouns.

When Awâsis returns home, she and Kôhkum make a new batch of bannock to share with Awâsis’s new animal friends.

All of the animals and ingredients are named using the Cree words for them. A glossary and pronunciation guide at the end offer further insight into the words (although much can be guessed from context and illustrations).

A delightful story stressing helpfulness and collaboration, while also instilling cultural/linguistic knowledge.
