Batcat and ghost friend Al are back in the third volume of this absolutely delightful early reader graphic novel. This time, Batcat and Al (who are both nonbinary) are looking forward to fall on Spooky Isle, especially the island’s Night Festival.
Al really, really wants to win the cooking contest—if only they can decide on a recipe. The Fest-i-fool eating contest is more Batcat’s style, though they’ll support their friend however they can. In the end, though, the duo learn that there are many ways to win, and that having a friend is one of them.
Author/illustrator Meggie Ramm once again blends spooky and adorable in a perfect balance, seasoned with puns and charm, served on a vibrant palette. And while Batcat and Al’s nonbinary identities are incidental to the plot, Ramm gives a gentle nod to the concept by reminding readers, “The Island Witch (in case you forgot) was neither a good witch nor a bad witch. She was somewhere in between.”
Young readers of all identities should enjoy this amusing tale, but nonbinary ones should particularly appreciate the two nonbinary friends’ whimsical adventures. Highly recommended.
