In this graphic novel anthology, nine transgender people (men, women, and nonbinary) tell their stories of growing up with challenges and joys to become who they are, successful adults in a variety of fields.
Each biography is told in the first person, written by co-editor Sammy Lisel based on interviews she did with the subjects.* Lisel then paired with co-editor and illustrator Hazel Newlevant, who found a different trans artist to illustrate each short biography.
The subjects, diverse in racial/ethnic identities, come from a variety of social and economic backgrounds; took different paths to transition and coming out; experienced a range of responses from family, friends, and colleagues; and have made their marks in a variety of ways. Some always knew the career they wanted; others took more winding routes. Many (though not all) experienced bullying or threats to their lives because of people’s responses to their trans identities; one turned to alcohol to try and cope (and then got sober). But they show, too, how they found resources, allies, and support for both their identities and careers; several also note the happy relationships they are now in as well as their professional achievements.
The people profiled are: scientist and educator Sam Long; forest ranger and rock climber Robbi Mecus; firefighter Brooke Guinan; engineer Kate Stone; singer-songwriter Robbie Ahmed; nonprofit executive Diamond Stylz; and fashion entrepreneur Marli Washington; scientist Robin Aguila; and activist and author Rebekah Bruesehoff. While they may be well-known in their fields, they are not celebrities on the level of Laverne Cox, say, or Chaz Bono—but it this “everyday” quality, I believe, that makes their stories so powerful. Their achievements and happiness seem attainable, and they offer important role models for trans kids (and even their cis peers).
The diversity of the subjects, the emphasis on finding joy (even if encountering challenges), and the readable, engaging graphic format make this a volume that should be loved by many and become a required purchase for all middle grade library collections. Highly recommended.
