This collection of short biographies ranges far to give us insights into the lives and significance of political leaders, athletes, fashion icons, writers, musicians, artists, scientists, and other changemakers. Unsurprisingly (especially given author Alyssa Reynoso-Morris’s queer identity), it includes several LGBTQ people, including Frida Kahlo, Silvia Rivera, Diana Taurasi, Sofia Mulanovich, Marta Vieira da Silva, and Yulimar Rojas Rodríguez. Taurasi and Marta’s biographies don’t indicate that they are queer, however, which is unfortunate.
Nevertheless, young readers will learn much about the contributions of the varied Latine people profiled here and perhaps be inspired to make their own marks on the world. Illustrator Sol Cotti’s appropriately bold images add interest and flair.
