Two burly, bearded dads just want to sleep in on a cold winter’s day. The kids, however, are up and ready to play again in this fun rhyming tale.
“We love our kids,/They give us pride,/But please stop shouting,/And play outside,” the dads ask. Over several more pages, we see them trying to sleep in as the kids romp around them. “We’re sleepy bears,/We want to cuddle;/Just a little more sleep,/Then we’ll join the huddle,” they plead. Soon, they say, they’ll make breakfast, play, and do house tasks—“Just one more hour, is all we ask.”
Eventually, the kids agree. When the alarm does ring, the dads get up to go play with them in the snow.
While the plot is simple, the tale is told with such fun and cheer (despite the sleepy grumpiness) that I couldn’t help but smile at this wonderful little slice of family life. It’s a self-published book, but is much more polished than many, with dynamic and whimsical illustrations by masastarus to complement the rhymes of author Danni Cannon. I definitely recommend it.
Two-bear families will particularly appreciate the story, but so will those with any type of sleepy parents. The title and some Christmas-y decorations mark it as a Christmas book, but it’s really more about wintertime than the holiday per se.
The dads read as White; their children are of various racial/ethnic identities.
