Drew loves to draw. When she does, however, her sketches come to life and leave her notebook, exploring and sometimes causing mischief in the world around them, such as during a near-disastrous trip to the Art Institute of Chicago.
When Drew begins to doubt that her simple art skills have a place in her school’s art club, however, where the other students draw “cool and complicated” characters, she decides to create something bigger than she’s ever made before: The Leviathan, or Levi for short.
But Levi is even harder to contain than her other doodles, and begins consuming her classmates’ own living drawings. Can Drew reverse the damage and make amends—especially when the monster seems linked to her own emotions?
One of Drew’s friends appears to be a masculine-presenting girl and another uses “they/them” pronouns. Additionally, another of the friends draws a pair of “magical butterfly boyfriends”—two princes who fall in love and play a significant role in the plot.
Imaginative and fun, with underlying themes of friendship and finding balance in one’s feelings. There’s a clear setup for a sequel.
Drew is White and her friends have a range of racial/ethnic identities.
