Two male koalas are best friends despite some differences—Eustace is lazy; Clyde is adventurous. They live together in a home in a tree—a tree that is also home to many other animals. One day, they decide the tree has gotten too crowded, and they go off to seek another abode. When they are unable to find one that suits them both, they decide that the best place for them is back at their original home. The illustrations show their neighbors welcoming them back with smiles and open arms as the text tells us, “Wherever they have each other is the perfect place for a koala pair.” It’s a sweet story and sometimes is catalogued as an LGBTQ book, but the queerness is very euphemistic. Eustace and Clyde are still called “friends,” however close, not partners or spouses.
