Written in 1999, this was the first book written specifically to help support lesbian- and gay-headed families in school settings. Useful for both educators and parents, it weaves in in many direct quotes from children, teachers, administrators, and parents as it covers topics such as communication between lesbian and gay parents and school staff; curriculum planning that is inclusive of all families; connecting children’s family experiences with school experiences; homophobia at school and at home; and gender, gender roles, and different understandings about role models. While it is not as broadly inclusive of the entire LGBTQ spectrum as we should hope for today, it was a groundbreaking and insightful book for its time, and may still offer food for thought.
