The classic story of a girl and her two moms. Note that it has been superseded by a new (2015) version with updated text and illustrations.
Heather lives happily with her two moms. When she joins her first playgroup, however, she wonders if she’s the only one who doesn’t have a father, and starts to cry. (In the 2015 edition, she doesn’t cry, but merely wonders.) The caregiver then asks all of the children to share a little about their families, and Heather learns that families come in many different forms, all united by love.
This title has actually gone through several similar editions even before the major 2015 update. The very first version included pages that discussed how Heather’s mothers had her through assisted insemination. Author Lesléa Newman cut them from later editions, however, in order to keep the plot focused. There are also 10th and 20th anniversary editions with new backmatter. Please see my review of the 2015 edition for an interview with Newman that includes more about the story’s evolution.
