The third charming and magical chapter book in this series again brings us adorable protagonist pups and incidental nonbinary inclusion.
In this volume, magical pups Hocus and Pocus are watching their human witch, Jinx, and her apprentices (including nonbinary Tam) prepare for Inkwell’s local Winter Solstice party. Decorations are set; the apprentices are practicing for the talent show. The only problem is that there’s no snow, putting several of the planned events at risk.
Hocus and Pocus want to help, so they ask Nimbus, a friendly, wish-granting sorcerer (who also happens to be nonbinary), to assist. But a wish for snow is a big, delicate wish, and the snow is soon overwhelming. Hocus’s feet are turning into pawsicles. A promising solution then turns into something worse—or does it? Inkwell’s residents are a creative bunch, and find a way to celebrate even if things didn’t go exactly as planned.
The story will bring a dose of cozy warmth to chilly winter nights as it offers gentle lessons about helping, community, and dealing with unforeseen circumstances. Author A. R. Capetta’s prose is again delightful, and illustrator Charlene Chua’s images are absolutely adorable. It’s another winner in a highly recommended series.
In addition to Tam and Nimbus, one other minor character is referred to with they/them pronouns.
