In Search of the Pinmaker: A Fantasy Pin World Adventure: Volume 2

This second book in an illustrated early middle grade series continues the story of four eighth-graders who have received fantasy enamel pins that give them superpowers. The pins are tied to a new theme park that’s opening in town—but the corporation behind the park might be hiding nefarious plans, which are somehow related to the secret of the pins. Can the friends discover what is really going on and who is behind the pins before it’s too late?

The book follows the lines of a classic kids-save-the-world-from evil-corporation plot, but the focus on fantasy pins gives it an enjoyable twist, particularly for kids who are into trading pins or other collectibles. More importantly, the fact that it stars four Black protagonists, at least three of whom are queer, is notable and welcome: Angela lives with her dad and soon-to-be stepmom; Sophie has two moms and a crush on another girl, Skylar is nonbinary, Travis has a crush on another boy. Their queerness is not central to the story, but Travis comes out to his grandfather at one point, and Skylar reflects a few times on why their “they/them” pin is important to them. These moments feel authentic to the characters. One other significant character is a trans woman, but to say more would be to reveal spoilers, so I’ll just note that I expect her to play an even bigger role in the third volume.

The story is told through the kids’ alternating viewpoints, and weaves in each of their personal challenges with family, friendships, and (in some cases) crushes. The characters thus feel relatable and realistic, even as they go on their superpowered adventures. A fun and recommended tale.
