It’s Hard to Be a Baby

Being a baby isn’t easy: it’s hard to communicate your needs; you’re always getting picked up and put down, and “some of your clothes are really goofy.” This sweet picture book sympathizes with young ones’ struggles, though, and assures them that soon, things will get better.

With gentle humorous text from Cheryl B. Klein and warm illustrations by Juana Medina, the story follows several babies from womb through early infancy as they figure out their world. Families with queer parents are among those pictured, as the narrator assures babies that they’ll soon eat, crawl, walk, and run. In the end, we see that it is an older sibling who has been dispensing this wise advice.

The queer parents seem to be two dads and a couple who could be read as two moms or a mom and a nonbinary parent. The babies and their parents are of various skin and hair tones; the sibling at the end has peach skin and brown hair.

Utterly charming, for both babies and their helpful older siblings.
