This 1995 anthology is one of the first lesbian parenting books to be published in Canada. It brings together numerous authors writing on topics including the choice to parent (and methods to use); defining “family”; being a nongestational parent; raising children; answering children’s questions like “Do I have a dad?”; coming out while a parent; the intersection of racial and queer identities; and legal concerns and strategies. The book is not a “how-to” per se, although there is much in it that lesbian (and other queer) parents would have found useful in their daily lives, as well as much to ponder about parenting and identity. A lot of the information, particularly in the legal realm, is now outdated, but the book stands as a testament to queer parenting history and to some of the common concerns and strengths that we still share.
