Journalist Freddy McConnell, whose path to parenthood was documented in the film Seahorse: The Dad Who Gave Birth, here brings young readers a story about the relationship of a single dad and child.
Before bedtime one day, Little One asks his Papa one day, “What do we need?” As the two of them go about the next day, they ponder this question, deciding they need food, friends, to be safe, a place to call home—but most of all, they need someone to love. Each other.
This sweet and lovely story has no clear LGBTQ inclusion, but I’m going to make a rare exception here and include it, since “seahorse dad” is a common appellation for trans dads who give birth, and that’s clearly what McConnell has in mind here. And even though we need more books of all types about trans parents, we have so few that aren’t “about” being trans that this one comes as a welcome addition.
