Love Is Love

Several children discuss with each other the homophobia they’ve encountered. The story is narrated by an unnamed boy who is explaining to a friend that he has a problem: some kids were saying that his shirt with a rainbow-colored heart was “gay.” He thinks it’s because he has two dads. He doesn’t like when kids use the term “gay” derogatively or say his family is not a real one.

We then see images of happy people around the world wearing similar rainbow shirts, as the boy ponders that being different might be scary to some people, but that his dads really love each other and him. He also tells us he knows “lots of other gay people,” including his teacher and others in his community, and that there are “lots of famous gay people,” too. He says that his dads have told him being gay is nothing to be ashamed of, though some people think so. The family gathers to fly kites with other people wearing rainbow-heart shirts (presumably other LGBTQ families) as the protagonist explains that the love in their family is what matters. Notable for its stress on the idea of a supportive LGBTQ community as well as on individual LGBTQ families.
