My Family Tree and Me

A boy tells the story of both sides of his family, with the story of his father’s side starting from the front of the book and the story of his mother’s side starting from the back. They meet in the middle with a big spread showing the entire family, of mostly Asian and White descent, with one Black uncle. One uncle has a same-sex partner, but they are unfortunately labeled “Uncle (mom’s brother)” and “Uncle’s partner.” Contrast this to another uncle who married into the family, who is labeled “Uncle (husband of mom’s sister).” The better parallel for the same-sex couple would therefore have been “Uncle (mom’s brother)” and “Uncle (partner of mom’s brother).” “Uncle’s partner” makes him sound like less of an actual uncle himself.
