My Parents Won’t Stop Talking

A girl with two moms and a younger sibling is excited about going to the park—but oh no! The neighbors are outside, and the girl’s moms always stop to talk with them.

The girl says she’s good at waiting, and recalls all the times she’s done so—like in school, when she always lines up last because her last name is Zurowski. She imagines she could sit for 10 hours at the dentist, 35 hours of her brother’s “boring ballet recitals,” and for hours driving to grandma’s in Florida with only rice cakes to eat. As her moms natter on, she tries various tactics like tapping her foot, groaning, and counting things to pass the time, but the adults still won’t stop talking. And talking. The girl is clearly fed up with the chatter about boring things and people she’s never met.

Finally, she thinks through all the things she could be doing at the park, and hatches an imaginative plan to deal with the situation. Will it succeed?

This is a lighthearted look at a universal problem of childhood, seen through the eyes of a child who just happens to have two moms. Authors and illustrators Emma Hunsinger and Tillie Walden are at their best in the creative sequences of the girl’s imagination. Fun and delightful!

The girl and one mom are White; the other mom and brother have brown skin and hair.
