An anthropomorphic square named Sam longs to be a circle and do the things that circles do, like roll. One day, he takes a tumble and discovers that he can in fact do so. Although the other shapes had never seen a rolling square before, they tell him he was “amazing.” He “felt as light as air,” so he keeps rolling—so much so that he eventually gets a new job rolling. “He wasn’t the smoothest of circles,” we learn, “but the circles welcomed such an enthusiastic new roller.” Not an explicitly LGBTQ-inclusive book, but the analogy to not feeling like one fits one’s body seems clear. Notable for having the other shapes be completely supportive, though some readers will prefer stories that are less allegorical and more human.
