Books about different family types are increasingly common, but this bright, rhyming picture book focuses not on the structures of its diverse families, but on what families do to keep their homes and the peopleĀ in it well cared for. Houses need vacuuming; meals need cooking; and kids need help with homework, sign-ups for school activities, dentist appointments, and more. “The way different families will manage them all, well, thatās for each to choose,” the book says affirmingly. It then encourages young readers to play a role:
Maybe you think: āI could be part of that!
Iām responsible! Clever! And strong!ā
And then realize all the wonderful ways
you have helped in your home all along!
Whether by helping to fold towels, taking out the recycling, helping with meal prep, or more, there are lots of ways to be part of the family team, the book says. It insists, “Each job is a hug at its core,” showing that we care about each other and helping to create a home that all of its members can be proud of.
This is an absolutely delightful book and one of few that shows the effort that goes into running a household. Parents will be thrilled at how it helps young readers to value—and participate in—this work, while young readers should be inspired.Ā The families depicted are diverse in structure and racial/ethnic identities, and a two-mom family is among them. Highly recommended.
