Author Chasten Buttigieg is a teacher, activist, husband to former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, and dad of twins. His first picture book is a sweet family story about a boy and a girl who are happily preparing for the homecoming of their Papa, who has been away on a trip. It’s clearly inspired by his real life, but is not specific to his family; it’s an entertaining tale that could be about almost any parents and children.
The children in the story, Rosie and Jojo, make a big, glittery sign; pick Papa’s favorite flowers, and (with a little help from Daddy), bake a cake. After that, they prepare to drive to the airport, and bring along things they think Papa may have missed—his slippers, robe, books, and even his bicycle and the family dog. Daddy reminds them that they need to pack themselves into the van, too, and off they go.
Their reunion at the airport is as joyous as expected. Papa gamely dons robe and slippers, and the family all hugs. There’s just one problem: with their overflowing van, where will Papa sit?
This lighthearted story may take some of the sting out of a parent’s absence by focusing on the fun that can be had preparing for their return and then reuniting. Buttigieg has created a tale that is delightful, well-paced, and overflowing with love. Softly-colored illustrations by Dan Taylor capture both the everyday chaos and the warmth of the family.
The story is recommended for any family with a traveling parent, although two-dad families may particularly appreciate it. (You can also pair it with Mama and Mommy and Me in the Middle, the tale of a girl spending time with one mom while the other is traveling.)
Daddy and Papa read as White; their two children have light brown skin and curly, darker brown hair.
