Cousins Scoochie and Skiddles love spending time together and having adventures in this slice-of-life book based on the author’s own family.
In this volume, Scoochie has been going to the skating rink with her Daddy and taking roller skating lessons. At first, she has to work through some fears to gain skills and confidence. When Skiddles later comes to visit, Scoochie delights in teaching her how to skate in turn and to work through her similar fears.
I like that the story depicts a two-dad family without being “about” having LGBTQ parents (for others, filter my database by the “Incidental queerness” tag) and offers positive lessons about perseverance and facing one’s fears. The book offers affirmations at the end for readers to use in their own endeavors.
Skiddles and her dads are White, while Scoochie reads as Black or biracial. Background characters reflect a variety of racial/ethnic identities.
