The Big Day: A GIANT Celebration of Love

A small human boy is invited (for reasons initially unknown) to the wedding of two giants (a two-man couple) in this cheery rhyming tale. A diverse range of magical and mythical creatures are also at the nuptials, including witches, wizards, unicorns, and elves. One groom brings a bouquet of “fresh morning dew,” while the other carries “sky that bright stars wandered through.”

The grooms say their vows across an entire spread that requires the book to be turned 90 degrees so it is seen vertically, a fun choice for the BIG characters. At the reception, the boy is wowed by the immense, wildly imagined treats, but finally has to ask the grooms (referred to somewhat impersonally as Big Groom One and Groom Two) why he was invited. “Love is a force that makes tiny things grow,” Groom Two says, and explains, “We’re sending you back with a message for all: Love is just love, whether GIANT or small.”

Think about the plot too much and questions arise (Why was this boy, out of all humans, invited? Why wasn’t his mom?), but that misses the point that this is simply silly fun with a message of love. Young readers, especially those who have attended weddings, should be amused by Giant Aunt Clara in her “ten-ton tiara,” by the huge carnivorous flowers in the church, and by other fantastical details that make the lesson less cloying, making it a recommended story.

The grooms are White; the boy has tan skin and brown hair. Guests at the wedding reflect a variety of skin tones, both real and imaginary.
