The Boy Who Cried Fabulous

A young boy named Roger sees almost everything in the world around him, from clothes to food, books, and the weather, as “fabulous.” His enthusiasm causes him to exclaim about so many things, though, that he’s always tardy, and so his parents try to ban “fabulous” from his vocabulary. He gets around this, however, by finding synonyms for the word, declaring all of the things at their town parade to be “marvelous,” “glorious,” and more. His parents are won over and affirm that he is “the world’s most fabulous son.” This isn’t an explicitly queer-inclusive book, but “fabulous” is a word coded as gay, and Roger’s mom’s demand that he go “straight, straight to class” could also be a double entendre, making this a definite queer fable, albeit a less obvious one than some.
