Nicole and Kristan want to start a family, and they’re taking us along on the journey as they venture into the world of foster-to-adopt care, facing the emotional and sometimes funny challenges of bureaucracy, childproofing, and patience. One of the parents-to-be, Nicole Opper, is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker who may be best known as director and producer of the 2010 feature documentary Off and Running, which tells the story of Avery, a Black teen who had been adopted as an infant by two White Jewish lesbians. In The F Word, Opper turns the camera on herself and Kristen as they seek to start their own family.
