In my family,
there are traditions.
And my favorite—
happen around this table.
This lyrical poem tells of a Black family’s traditions and milestones through the eyes of a young boy. We see the family at the grandparents’ anniversary, at a Juneteenth celebration, at the arrival of a new baby sister, and at his two uncles’ wedding. Each occasion brings new things to notice and new emotions to explore as this multigenerational family celebrates its meaningful moments. There are fireworks on the Fourth of July, a rainbow cake at the wedding, and a “lowcountry boil” of crabs and corn for Juneteenth—but mostly there is a family, engaging with love.
Author Antwan Eady’s lovely text is dotted with humor, keeping it from cloying, while illustrator London Ladd’s warm and colorful illustrations bring the words to vivid life.
This is our table.
Of love. Of hope. Of pride. Of freedom.
And this is a beautiful, powerful book that is highly recommended.
