Part of the bestselling Princess in Black early chapter book series, this volume includes a gender-creative prince.
Princess Magnolia is getting ready for the ball at the Flower Festival—when a grumpy emu appears and starts kicking over the decorations! Princess Magnolia could fight off a monster by changing into her secret identity, the Princess in Black, but she’s unsure what to do with an emu. An unknown knight appears and safely pushes the emu out the gate. He introduces himself as Prince Valerian. Princess Magnolia is grateful, but is really seeking help fixing the ruined decorations.
Luckily, Prince Valerian has a secret identity, too: the Prince in Pink, a party hero with a special flair for decorations and flourishes! The ball is a success—until the emu returns with her ostrich friends and threatens to ruin things again. This time, Princess Magnolia is ready to come to the rescue as the Princess in Black—but the Prince in Pink has a better sense of what the birds want, and uses his skills to glam up the avians and make them feel welcome at the party.
A light but fun read.
The princess and prince are both White; other characters are a variety of skin tones.
