Sixth-grader Malika “Boog” Wilson and her two friends Cedrick (who has two dads) and Jules (who uses they/them pronouns) can’t wait for Vanquisher Appreciation Week, when their community celebrates the extinction of the last vampires by the heroic Vanquishers. Boog’s parents still take precautions against the undead, however, much to Boog’s embarrassment.
When a new friend of the group goes missing, however, the friends begin to suspect the school guidance counselor, who’s been acting suspiciously. But their quest to find their friend reveals secrets about Boog’s parents—and indicates that perhaps, the vampires aren’t as extinct as it was hoped.
An exciting and slightly spooky mystery adventure with strong currents of friendship and community. Boog is Black, and other characters are mostly Black and Latine.
