This Is My Family A First Look At Same-Sex Parents

A clear, if slightly pedantic, explanation that while some families have a mom and a dad, some have two of each. We learn that “A man who wants to be in a loving relationship with another man is called gay,” and “A woman who wants to be in a loving relationship with another woman is called a lesbian,” but there is no mention of bisexual parents. The book also says that “Gay and lesbian parents can’t always make a baby the way other parents do,” and explains that “They may bring children with them from other relationships or they may choose to adopt a child,” but assisted reproduction is not mentioned.

The text stresses that same-sex parents care for and teach their children just like any other parents do. It also explains that some people think it is wrong for two men or two women to make a family, and “They may say unkind things to you and try to make you feel bad about  your family.” It suggests that children should talk with their parents if this happens—implying that the audience for the book is children of same-sex parents. The definitions at the start of the book, though, feel like ones aimed at allies. A well-intentioned book, but with significant gaps and inconsistencies.
