Too Green!

A young child declares his dislike of the green vegetables that his mama brings home. He’d rather just have the bread his mum is making. But an image in his mum’s cookbook of a loaf of bread with a bowl of green soup catches his eye. His mama then involves him in helping to chop the vegetables and make the soup—only to have him proclaim, “It’s too green.” After watching his moms enjoy the soup, however, and being persuaded to try “Just one teeny sip,” he discovers that he actually likes it, and joyously asks for more.

The simple storyline of this rhyming board book is enhanced by the charming illustrations, including an amusing family cat. The wordless spread of the boy after he tries the soup is a lovely sequence of changing emotion. Children may be particularly entertained by the “Buurrrpppp!” the boy lets out after eating it.

Many children with two moms will delight to see a family like theirs in this fun and cheerful title—and even children in other types of families may empathize with the picky protagonist. And the book happily adds to the growing number of books with LGBTQ representation that is incidental to the plots.

Mama has dark brown skin and straight brown hair, Mum is White with blonde hair, and the child has light brown skin and brown hair.
