Mimi Lemay tells the story of her son, Jacob, who was assigned female at birth but insisted from the age of 2 1/2 that he was a boy. Lemay struggled to understand, and to see how his journey in some ways paralleled her own, growing up in a rigid ultra-Orthodox Jewish community that she ultimately decided to leave. She weaves reflections on faith and motherhood into this narrative of helping her son, too, forge a few life. Lemay is a member of the Parents for Transgender Equality National Council of the Human Rights Campaign.
