Why This Straight Mom Brings Her Kids to Pride

As Pride Month winds down, I want to give a nod to our allies, who play a vital role in building bridges as we move towards equality. One example is mom Emily Rosenbaum, who writes at Kveller about walking in Boston’s Pride Parade with her kids and their synagogue. They go to Pride, she says, […]

On Tragedy and Remembrance

(This was originally published last week as my Mombian newspaper column.)

A safe and successful Boston Marathon one year from the one that broke all our hearts.

From Boston, Thinking of My Family and All Our Families

My thoughts today are with the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy, their families, and friends. My family and I live outside of Boston, and we consider the city almost as much our home as we do the suburb where our house stands. In college, I proudly joined the Wellesley College “Scream Tunnel” to cheer on the runners. Two days ago, my spouse and I spent the afternoon walking around the city, noting the crowd-control barricades already in place for the race in Copley Square.

From Pillows to Penguins: My Night at the Residence Inn Boston Harbor

I had the pleasure last weekend of spending a night at the Residence Inn Boston Harbor on Tudor Wharf, courtesy of Residence Inn by Marriott, which is reaching out to blogging parents for feedback and ideas.

I’m very picky when it comes to doing commercial promotions on this blog–probably more so because I’ve been in corporate marketing myself. I don’t want to blindly shill products and services. Having said that, I DO think it’s important for LGBT parents to be in the mix when companies are reaching out to attract families, and I’m delighted to help when companies truly seem like they want to be inclusive.

Bunny Saved from Train, and I Miss the Boat

My son loves his stuffed bear in a way that makes me hope that when he’s older, he marries someone he loves just as much. (The bear, I suspect, may be his best man.) I was therefore touched by a heart-warming story in early June about a Boston transit worker who stopped a train in order to rescue a little girl’s stuffed bunny that had fallen onto the tracks. I saw the story on several mainstream news channels, including the NBC Nightly News—but I somehow didn’t make the connection that the family involved was that of lesbian moms Casey and Michelle and their daughter Roozle, whose adventures Casey chronicles at Life with Roozle.

Boston Adoption Agency Hosts Session for LGBT Prospective Parents

Interested in adoption? Live in the greater Boston area? The Home for Little Wanderers, a private, non-profit child and family service agency, is having an information session for prospective LGBT parents this coming Thursday. They’ve long been an ally of our community.

Lesbian Swans and LGBT Parenting Films – LGBT Parenting News from Boston

Two pieces of LGBT parenting news from my town of Boston: On May 3, the Boston Public Garden’s famed swans return for the season. The birds, Romeo and Juliet, are in fact a pair of females who laid eggs and attempted to care for them together, as the Boston Globe reported, and I discussed, a few years back.

Adoption Agency Seeks Lesbian Moms–But What About Gay Dads?

Every Sunday, the Boston Globe publishes “Sunday’s Child,” a column featuring a child or siblings who need an adoptive family. This week, the column (not yet online) notes that the child, “would do well with a single mother or a two-parent family (mom and dad or two moms) in which she is the only or

If We Can Make It There . . .

. . . but we couldn’t. The New York State Senate failed to pass a marriage equality bill yesterday on a vote of 24-38. Not even close. Never mind that the state has one of the biggest meccas of LGBT life in the country, and is home to the Stonewall Inn, the place where the
