Two new archives of LGBTQ-inclusive children’s books, one in Canada and one in the United States, showcase the history of such books over half a century, along with the vibrant, resilient lives of the children and families they represent.
There are many excellent new LGBTQ-inclusive kids’ books—but a picture book and a middle grade title out this week are among my recent favorites, bursting with queer joy, wisdom, family, and community.
Let’s catch up with some of the LGBTQ-inclusive middle grade novels that have come out (!) since the start of summer. They bring us an original twist on a magic school, time travel, monsters, baby-sitters, and more, as they explore personal growth, friendships, and what it means to be a family.
A federal bill that would ban books, activities, and programs that mention transgender people—and potentially all LGBTQ people—from K-12 public schools nationwide has moved ahead in the House and been introduced in the Senate, while two other school censorship bills have also advanced in the House in recent weeks.

For July 4th, I’m highlighting seven children’s books about LGBTQ Americans who advanced civil rights, fought for our country’s unity, and evocatively conveyed the strengths, flaws, and diversity of our country in words and music.
Pride Month is nearing its end, and July 4 is approaching, so my thoughts are turning to all that has made our country great–including queer people. These new books for kids offer insights into LGBTQ history and famous LGBTQ Americans who have made their marks in dance, sports, fashion, activism, music, and literature.
