Transgender Day of Remembrance

In Memoriam: Transgender Day of Remembrance 2025

Today marks the Transgender Day of Remembrance, when we honor the lives of those who died because of anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. I wish all of my transgender friends and readers love and support on this day of mourning.

In Memoriam: The Minneapolis Shooting Victims

In Memoriam: Sam Nordquist

Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old biracial transgender man, was murdered in upstate New York this month. Anti-trans violence is sadly nothing new, but the brutal death of this young man, whom classmates describe as “a friend without limits,” feels particularly horrific, underscoring the need to keep fighting against anti-trans policies and rhetoric.

World Famous Penguin Dad Passes; Same-Sex Partner Sings in Tribute

Sphen, a gentoo penguin who rose to worldwide fame with his same-sex mate Magic after they incubated eggs and raised two chicks together, died this month at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. When Magic saw Sphen’s body, “He immediately started singing, which was beautifully reciprocated by the colony,” the aquarium said.

In Memoriam: Nex Benedict

Nex Benedict and the Need for Change

Like many of us, I have been saddened and angered by the death of 16-year-old nonbinary transgender student Nex Benedict after an assault at school. Nex’s death is a tragedy—and Nex is not the only trans young person to have died too soon.
