Political Birds
The New York Times reports today that many conservatives have taken the family lives of penguins, depicted in the blockbuster documentary March of the Penguins, as affirming “traditional norms,” and proof of “intelligent design.” Funny how these same conservatives seem to be ignoring examples of same-sex pairs among swans and other animals, including penguins. La Cage Aux Folles indeed.

Still, March of the Penguins is a great film, despite its accolades from the right. Stunning photography, and birds that are both regal and adorable. [...] I think the right has felt particularly sensitive about penguins ever since they claimed March of the Penguins as an example of “traditional family values.” I’m not sure what’s more upsetting to them about And Tango Makes Three: the idea that same-sex orientation might exist in nature, and is thus genetic, rather than a conscious choice, or the idea that a same-sex orientation might be more about who you spend your life with than about sex, per se. by D | posted in Politics, Entertainment, Funny If It Wasn’t Scary [...]
