Hello to the L Word
Being a mother means you can never escape.
We had some friends over last night to watch the season premiere of the L Word. I was looking forward to (after our son went to bed) an evening of adult conversation, adult beverages, and watching hot women, a nice break from my toddler-focused day. To my horror, though, what do I hear in one of the very first scenes? “Hello, everybody, so glad to see you . . .”
It’s the “Hello” song from my son’s Music Together class. Arghhhh!
Don’t get me wrong– Music Together is a great program for kids: it’s fun, interactive, and teaches basic musical skills like rhythm and pitch without making it seem like learning. I love the program and I love the teacher. But when one has heard the songs ad infinitum in the house, in the car, over and over in only that way toddlers can play music, one longs for a little variety. The “Hello” song we’ve heard particularly often, since it starts every term’s collection of music.
After my initial consternation wore off, however, I was even more happy to be associated with a children’s music program that got itself a product placement on the L Word. (The music instructor on the show was wearing a shirt with a prominent “Music Together” logo.”) If you’re looking for a good music program, I highly recommend finding a Music Together instructor in your area. Try the “Class Locator” on the Music Together site. I’m going to make sure to play the CD this morning in honor of their smart marketing decision.

[...] I love my son’s Music Together class, as I’ve written before. Not only is it great for the kids, but it encourages us parents to participate in our children’s musical exploration, sharing drums, bells, scarves, shakers, and anything else that makes a sound or marks a rhythm. In how many other places would you find a 40-something straight man asking his son for a silk scarf, saying “I need a scarf. I can’t dance without a scarf”? [...]
[...] Our Music Together teacher in New York was similarly welcoming. I can’t vouch for all teachers in this nationwide-program, but will note that the overall organization seems to have had some product-placement deal with The L Word, as I wrote before. If you’re looking for a welcoming music program for infants to preschoolers, at least give it a try. Use the Class Locator on their site to find a teacher near you. Most offer free demo classes of some sort. (I’m not affiliated with Music Together or in any way getting paid to promote them—just a satisfied parent.) Bookmark to: [...]
