Rainy-Day Activity: Google Video
Here’s my latest rainy-day activity for a train-obsessed pre-schooler: Google Video, search: “locomotive”. You’ll find lots of short videos (many under three minutes) from around the world, showing all kinds of engines. Also works with fire trucks, horses, and pretty much anything else your child may be into.
While there are good reasons to limit children’s exposure to electronic media, this is in fact a great way to find a few minutes of quick entertainment without committing to a half hour of television. It’s a good supplement, though not a replacement, for any related books you may be reading. Do read the video descriptions before playing them, so you don’t inadvertently watch any train crashes or other things that may be scary or inappropriate for kids.

(Disclaimer: My son has never actually eaten Twinkies or Cap’n Crunch cereal. I have yet to find a Web site involving art made from broccoli and carrots, however.) Next time you’re looking for an alternative to the children’s-brand sites, and are tired of searching through Google Videos to entertain your troops, give this a whirl. Bookmark to: [...]
