All parents and caregivers should have a few quick and easy gimmicks up their sleeves to entertain children at a moment’s notice. Here’s a silly paper trick to balance out all the political posts I’ve been doing lately:
1. Fold an index card or similar piece of paper in half lengthwise.
2. Cut through both sides, along the red lines as shown in the diagram. Cuts should be about 1/2″ apart. You may end up with more lines than in the picture.
3. Cut through both sides, along the blue lines. Note that the first and last ones are interior to the first and last red lines.
4. Cut along the green line. Note that this line doesn’t go all the way to the ends of the card.
5. Open gently.
It’s not the height of fashion, but it’s good for amusing young ones. Set it up by asking them if they think you can cut the card and put it over your head. Try it with subscription cards from the magazines in the doctor’s office next time you’re there. (This is why no mom should be without a mini-penknife in her pocket.)
