Not only has Residence Inn been recently honored for the Twitter party they threw on LGBT travel, but the brand’s parent company, Marriott, last week launched #LoveTravels, “a multicultural campaign that conveys the company’s commitment to make everyone feel comfortable being who they are, everywhere they travel.” The campaign features some well-known LGBT celebrities, as well as dads Scott and Chad — who were filmed with their children Olivia and Lucas at a Residence Inn in New York.
Marriott partnered with photographer Braden Summers to create and share “exclusive and powerful images celebrating inclusion.” The images include basketball player Jason Collins and fashion model Geena Rocero in addition to the dads and several others. They will be displayed as building wraps on five Marriott hotels in Washington, D.C., a series of print ads, an online gallery, and elsewhere in cities throughout the U.S.
In the video below, Scott explains that although the two of them got married on the first day they could do so legally in the U.S., it wasn’t until they had kids that they felt many began to accept their relationship. He says,”When we had kids I think people kind of went ‘Oh, they’re just like us.’ … It struck a chord with people that just getting married didn’t.”
Not that I’d ever advocate that LGBT people should have kids just to be socially accepted — but Scott makes a good point that those of us who do have kids are in a good position to be bridge builders.
