This new Cheerios ad, featuring two gay dads and their young daughter, is one of the sweetest commercials featuring LGBTQ parents that I’ve seen.
The three-minute ad, from General Mills Canada, features gay dads André and Jonathan and their daughter Raphaelle. The dads share their story of meeting and starting a family, and offer some thoughts about those who doubt their ability to be good parents.
The ad is part of an online and television campaign in Canada, and plays on the idea of the “Cheerios effect“: “the tendency for small wettable floating objects to attract one another.” The ad ends with the tag line, “We all love to connect. That’s the Cheerios effect.”
Cheerios faced criticism from the far right last year for including mixed-race, different-sex parents in an ad, but ignored it and featured the same family in a new commercial for the Super Bowl. Doubtless the same folks will object to this ad.
More tasty breakfast crunchiness left for the rest of us, I say.
All power to them! A family is not always a Dad and a Mom whether by circumstance or choice. So long as the child grows up in a loving and protective environment and flourishes, that is what is important. Religion has no say in what makes a family.
Wonderful! At last all can love openly, parent and every family can be respected. Thank you, Cheerio’s, for leading the way.
