The elder Smith relates the intolerance he faced in 1956, when he married his wife, whom many assumed to be White. When he first found out that Nadine was gay, “it took me a while before the light came on,” he says. Ultimately, however, he realized his initial attitude was the same as that of the people who didn’t want him to marry his wife.
