Actor Neil Patrick Harris has lent his voice to a brand-new audio recording of And Tango Makes Three, the children’s book based on the true story of two male penguins who raise a chick together. Listen to a clip below. The book also celebrates its 10th anniversary with two new editions, including a board book!
The And Tango Makes Three: 10th Anniversary Edition, by real-life gay dads Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, comes with an all-new authors’ note and an exclusive poster, along with a slightly different cover. The first-ever board book edition comes with sturdiness (though as with all board books, your mileage may vary, depending on the age and toothiness of your kids). The audio book is read by actor and gay dad Harris, which is really all that needs to be said.
Tango is a truly charming story with delightful illustrations and a much needed message about family diversity. It remains one of the most frequently challenged books in the U.S. because apparently some people can’t grasp the idea that same-sex parents occur in nature, but that’s all the more reason to celebrate its decade of persistent existence.
Tango isn’t the only classic LGBTQ-inclusive kids’ book to pass a milestone this year. Lesléa Newman’s Heather Has Two Mommies just celebrated its 25th anniversary with a new edition containing brand-new illustrations and updated text.
(And if you can’t get enough of Richardson and Parnell’s wonderful work, check out their Christian, the Hugging Lion, also based on a true story. It’s not explicitly an LGBTQ-inclusive book, but it’s as implicit as you want it to be, as I explained a while back.)
