11th Annual Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day is June 1

BOSTON, May 13, 2016: The 11th Annual Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day is Wednesday, June 1, 2016, when all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals, their family members, and allies are invited to blog or post on social media in celebration and support of LGBTQ families. The event, developed and run by the award-winning LGBTQ-parenting site Mombian, and sponsored by GLAAD, the Human Right Campaign, and the Family Equality Council, aims to share the stories of LGBTQ families and their allies, raising awareness of their diversity, their challenges, and their joys.

Hundreds of bloggers have taken part in past years, including parents across the LGBTQ spectrum, LGBTQ individuals without children, children of LGBTQ parents, and non-LGBTQ allies. The event is held at the start of June, between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, in order to honor both, but also to convey that not all families fit into the traditional structure of one mother and one father. Additionally, June is LGBTQ Pride Month.

“When the experiences of LGBT families are shared, we get a perspective that all too frequently is left out of mainstream media,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President & CEO. “These stories have a powerful impact on people’s perceptions and help to accelerate acceptance of LGBT families.”

Ellen Kahn, director of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Children, Youth & Families Program, said, “We look forward every year to Blogging for LGBT Families Day, when we can elevate the stories of LGBT-headed families from across the country–living our everyday lives with pride, courage, a sense of humor, and embracing the ways in which are families are unique and special.”

“Every Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day, we get deep, heartfelt essays from people whose voices aren’t heard often enough in our culture,” says Emily Hecht-McGowan, Interim Co-Executive Director and Director of Public Policy at Family Equality Council. “These LGBTQ parents tell stories that are uncommon and out-of-the-box, but the emotions and challenges they describe are universally recognizable.”

“A lot has changed for LGBTQ families over the 11 years I’ve been holding this event,” said Dana Rudolph, founder and publisher of Mombian. “We’ve made tremendous progress in both legal equality and visibility, but we still have far to go. By sharing stories of LGBTQ families — both the things that make us unique and the things that make us similar to all other families — we have the power to keep changing hearts and minds, as well as to support each other.”

  • To participate, bloggers should post at their own blogs, YouTube channels, or other public social media channels on a topic related to LGBTQ families on or before June 1, 2016, then visit mombian.com to submit the links to their entries. Mombian will showcase the full list of participants on June 1.
  • People may submit Facebook posts as long as they are set to “Public.”
  • Additionally, people may tweet in support of LGBTQ families on June 1 and include the hashtag #LGBTQfamilies.
  • All bloggers and tweeters who support LGBTQ families are welcome to participate — there is no need to be LGBTQ or a parent.
