The always wonderful Nancy podcast from WNYC has just run a series on Queer Money Matters, about “the straight economy and how queer people navigate it.” Listen here to their episode on “Babies and Bills,” about the costs of starting a family when queer.
They cover some of the same ground as I did in a piece for the Advocate a couple of years ago, but it’s definitely worth a listen to pick up fresh insights and advice from the people who share their stories with hosts Kathy Tu and Tobin Low. The bottom line is that it can cost much more to start a family if you’re LGBTQ—but it’s worth it. (I’ll also take this moment to give another shout out to companies like MassMutual, who are offering employee benefits that are much more inclusive of the way both queer and non-queer families are created. May others follow their example.)
Make sure to listen to the rest of Nancy’s Queer Money Matters series and to all of their other episodes in which they explore the people, stories, and issues that make up the texture of LGBTQ life today.
