Watch: A Queer Couple’s Continuing Journey as Foster Parents

Nicole Opper and Kristan Cassady’s The F Word docuseries in 2017 showed us the beginning of their journey to parenthood through the foster-to-adoption process. Now, they’re back with Season Two, which continues their story and adds in the stories of others.

The F Word

Season One showed us the emotional and sometimes funny challenges of bureaucracy, childproofing, and patience as Opper and Cassady begin the process of becoming foster parents. In Season Two, with Opper, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, again directing and producing, and Cassady producing, they show us what it was like bringing home their foster kid for the first time and also speak with other fost-adopt families about their experiences, exploring topics such as what it’s like waiting to be matched with a foster child; preparing their home for a child; raising children of a different race; flaws in the foster care system; the adoption process, and life after an open adoption.

The whole series is well worth watching whether you’re a foster or adoptive parent, considering it, or simply interested in families today. It’s rare to find a show about parenting that is both informative and highly enjoyable—this is one of them.
