Today is Multicultural Children’s Book Day, so I’m showcasing 10 recent picture books that are LGBTQ inclusive and celebrate a diversity of cultures!
Picture books about different types of families are increasingly common, but a new book gives us a take on the subject that feels particularly varied and intersectional, with a rarer—and emphatic—acknowledgment of chosen families.
The first must-read, LGBTQ-inclusive middle grade novel of 2023 is set in 1987 at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S., and centers on a girl whose father is dying from complications of AIDS.

Even as our community grapples with tragedy, I think it is important–perhaps more important than ever–to remind young people that there is also queer joy. The books here, some of the year’s best, cover a range of identities and themes and emphasize love, inspiration, and celebration.
