New Study: How Children of Gay and Lesbian Parents Overcome Stigma

A new study looks at how children of gay and lesbian parents — parents who came out after their kids were born — overcome stigma and create a positive family identity. While most of the messages they heard about their families were negative, the children used a variety of methods to minimize the impact of such messages.

Guest Post: Parenting Is the Great Equalizer

I’m very pleased to bring you a guest post today by Dawn Dais, author of The Sh!t No One Tells You: A Guide to Surviving Your Baby’s First Year, which I reviewed earlier this week. Dawn is a lesbian mom, but wrote the book for a general audience, because . . . well, I’ll let her explain.

12 Ways to Include Your Children in Your Wedding

Congratulations to all of the same-sex couples in Minnesota and Rhode Island who may choose to marry starting today. And on ABC Family’s The Fosters, fictional moms-of-five Stef and Lena are getting married on this coming Monday’s episode. I thought I’d mark the happy occasions by posting a revised version of a column I did several years ago, about planning a wedding if you already have kids.

Betty Crocker Bakes Cakes for Minnesota Same-Sex Weddings

Betty Crocker sits right up there with television’s June Cleaver as one of the icons of homemaking. How delightful, then, that General Mills, which owns the Betty Crocker brand, will be donating cakes to the first three same-sex couples to marry in Minnesota when it becomes legal to do so this Thursday — and that the brand is taking other steps to include same-sex couples in its marketing.

A Gay Dad Explains Why He Doesn’t Like the Phrase “Motherless Parenting”

From the “how could I have missed this” files: While studies show [and they do] that children with same-sex parents are just as well-adjusted as those with different-sex parents, they might lead us to overlook the full experience of adopted children, wrote Frank Ligtvoet in the New York Times a few weeks back. Ligtvoet, a gay dad with two adopted children, reminds us that “motherless parenting is a misnomer.”

The Adventures of Lois and Lily

I’d like to introduce you to Lois and Lily, two adventure-loving lesbian moms—who also happen to be Lego Minifigs. If only this were a real Lego play set. People seemed to like the image of the marrying Minifig moms I posted on Facebook just after the U.S. Supreme Court DOMA ruling, so I’ve brought them

Post of the Week - Mombian

Post of the Week: “Community Means a Lot of Things”

I read “Community Means a Lot of Things” at Outrunning the Storm and knew it had to be a Post of the Week. The author writes of trying to find a supportive community and role models for her son, who is autistic, and the parallels with her experience as a lesbian.
